I’m not interested in feeling guilty about things I enjoy. Why should I? I don’t like the phrase ‘guilty pleasure’ because I don’t think we should be made to feel ashamed, or guilty, about liking what we like. No one else gets to decide what you think is cool, what gives you pleasure and enjoyment, and certainly no one has the right to make you feel guilty about liking these things.
I’m not ashamed to admit that I love The Dixie Chicks. Have you ever seen them live? They are frigging AMAZING! I enjoy reading romance novels about cowboys. Just because I enjoy these things, doesn’t make me any less ‘cool’. As humans, we like a wide variety of things. It’s the ‘spice of life’ as they say. So, yeah while I also enjoy reading anything Brene Brown has ever written, I also get enjoyment out of a romance novel. And I don’t feel guilty about it.
It it so unnecessary to feel shame about enjoying the things you enjoy. And if your friends don’t enjoy the things you enjoy, THAT’S OK TOO! Because you don’t have to like ALL the same things. I don’t like all the things my husband like, and he doesn’t like all the things I like, but neither of us are embarrassed.
By not being real with yourself about the things you enjoy, you’re missing out on actually spending time doing the things you want to do! It all comes back to living life as your authentic self. Do you like wearing t-shirts with puns on them? Awesome! Do it, and do it with pride! When you own something fully, and are proud about it, it can no longer be used to embarrass you, because why would you be embarrassed about being you? Because it’s important to own who you are. It’s important to be ok with your mistakes, learn and grown from them. It’s important to laugh at yourself (like that time I almost walked out of a public toilet with my skirt tucked into my knickers, yep, laughed and then told everyone I saw that day so they could laugh too, because it’s funny).
So, stop using the phrase ‘guilty pleasure’. Stop feeling ashamed by liking what you like. Spend time doing the things that you enjoy and that make you happy. Be you – no apologies!
What are some things that you enjoy unashamedly?
