THE BRAIN DUMP

How Do You Know Who You REALLY Are? Why Core Values are Important.

Core Values? What? Why?

Intrinsic, or core, values are the fundamental beliefs that we carry. They help us be who we want to be in the world. They assist in guiding our behaviour, helping to understand the difference between right and wrong, they help us to live life as our authentic selves.

They do this by helping us to build and maintain our identity. They help us to live a life that aligns with our core values (our authentic selves). They can help us make better decisions; find fulfilling, nurturing, and collaborative relationships; and help to support personal and professional growth.

We all have these core values, even if we have never sat down and thought about what they are. I think it’s a good exercise to sit and think about what your inherent values are. Write them down, carry them with you. I find it useful to look at mine in times of stress, anxiety or indecision. They help me find strength.

Some examples of core values are

  • Patience
  • Kindness
  • Trust
  • Compassion
  • Integrity
  • Honesty
  • Dependable
  • Giving
  • Non-Judgemental
  • Accepting
  • Authenticity
  • Resilience
  • Curiosity
  • Determination
  • Fun
  • Creative
  • Reliable

Some of my own intrinsic values include; Courageous, resilient, open, loving, compassion & adaptable. I have more, but I find these help me in maintaining empathy, congruence and unconditional positive regard.

What are some of your core values? How do they help you live authentically?
